Design and Technology

Design and Technology  at St Anne’s

At St Anne’s CE Primary School, we aim to meet the needs of all pupils in creating a curriculum that encourages children to become resilient learners of Design Technology. Our core values, particularly Respect, Courage and Wisdom, will be used to encourage children to explore the nature and importance of Design and Technology. The curriculum is designed to progressively develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the ever-changing world of design and in particular technology. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing into our Design and Technology curriculum.

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an interactive process of designing and making, developing rich connections to the wider curriculum where possible. Key knowledge and skills for Design and Technology have been mapped across the school from EYFS to Year 6 to ensure progression between year groups. This also ensures that there is a context for the children’s work in Design and Technology; that they learn about real life structures and the purpose of specific examples, as well as developing their skills throughout the programme of study.

In partnership with Primary Knowledge Curriculum (PKC) we ensure skills and knowledge are built upon as pupils move through St Anne’s Primary School.

We believe our children will:

  • develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.
  • build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality prototypes and purposeful products for a wide range of users and critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others.
  • understand and apply the principles of nutrition and learn how to cook.
  • design and make a range of products. A good quality finish will be expected in all design and activities made appropriate to the age and ability of the child.
  • become risk taking resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens.
  • develop a critical understanding of Design and Technology, its impact on daily life and the wider world through evaluation of past and present design and technology approaches.

We believe that through these opportunities, children can become confident, life-long learners of Design and Technology who will shine in the world.

“God made everything based on his perfect design and, by the power of his own will, that design will be realised.”
