Geography at St Anne’s
‘You are the light of the world’
At St Anne’s CE Primary School, our mission is to meet the unique needs of all pupils in creating a curriculum that encourages children to become resilient learners of geography. Our core values, particularly Respect, Courage and Wisdom, will be used to encourage our children to flourish and reach their full potential as well as inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives. Children will be equipped academically, socially and spiritually with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments. As children progress, their growing knowledge about the world should help them to deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes, and of the formation and use of landscapes and environments. Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills provide the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.
As children work through the curriculum they will know more and understand more about their local area, the UK, Europe and the World. This rigorous approach to the development of geographical knowledge and conceptual understanding builds on their prior knowledge, allowing them to make meaningful connections and gain an understanding of how all things in our world are connected; conceptual understanding is at the heart of our curriculum.
Cross curricular links are fostered through the studying of World Geography in detail; not only does this help the children to understand people, places and environment it also provides foundational knowledge for their studies in other subject areas, for example their studies of the Vikings in History.
Within each year group the children will consider a range of human geographical features such as settlements, land use, trade links and natural resources. Children will use data from around the world, including from Geographical Information Systems, to understand social, economic and political globalisation. Children will have many opportunities to reflect upon the advantages and challenges globalisation brings and will consider the importance of sustainability and equity in relation to human interactions with the physical world.
Our geography curriculum aspires to stimulate interest and curiosity in our children for both their local area and the wider world. The units have been carefully chosen to equip pupils with knowledge about alternative cultures, diverse places, people and environments. We have seen that arming children with powerful knowledge about the world around them helps them to develop a love for the subject of geography, and also recognise their own role in becoming a responsible global citizen who can make a difference.
We believe that through these opportunities’ children can become confident, lifelong learners of Geography who will shine in the world.
